Window tinting with kids in the back: sun, glare and car seats
2 October 2026 2 min readSouth East Window Tinting
Stick-on shades fall off, tint does not. What rear tinting actually changes for a child in a car seat.

The short answer
Tinting the rear side windows is legal at any shade in Ireland and is the tidiest way to keep direct sun off a child seat. Quality film blocks the large majority of UV and takes the edge off cabin heat without a single suction cup.
What it changes on the school run
Key facts
- No sun-shade falling off the glass at 100km/h
- Rear cabin noticeably cooler on a long run
- Far less direct glare on a rear-facing seat
- Glass holds together better if it is ever broken
Which shade for a family car
20% or 15% on the rear sides is the usual choice. It is dark enough that a low sun is not sitting on a child's face, and light enough that you can still see what is going on behind you when reversing.

Any shade. There is no legal limit behind the B-pillar in Ireland.
Does tint block UV for children?
Quality film blocks the vast majority of UV, which matters most on long sunny drives.
