Importing a car with tinted windows into Ireland
6 October 2026 2 min readSouth East Window Tinting
A lot of lovely imports land here with film on the front doors that will never pass. It is a straightforward fix if you handle it early.

The short answer
An import may arrive with front film that is legal where it came from and not legal here. Irish rules require at least 65% light transmission on the windscreen and front side windows. The rear can stay exactly as dark as it is.
The usual pattern
Japanese imports and some UK cars come with a matched dark set all round. The rear is fine in Ireland. The front doors are the problem, and it usually surfaces at the first NCT.
| Glass | Legal position in Ireland | What we usually fit |
|---|---|---|
| Windscreen | Must pass at least 65% of light | Left clear, or a light top strip |
| Front side windows | Must pass at least 65% of light | Legal-limit film only |
| Rear side windows | No light limit | 20%, 15% or 5% to taste |
| Rear screen | No light limit | Matched to the rear sides |
Putting it right
Assess
We check what film is on and how baked-on it is.
Strip the front
Heat, peel, and full adhesive removal on the two front doors and the windscreen if needed.
Refit legal
Optional legal-limit film so the car still looks even from outside.
Leave the rear
Untouched, unless the film itself has failed.
What it costs
Stripping is quoted on inspection. A legal-limit front pair afterwards is standard price — €90 hatchback, €100 saloon, €110 SUV or jeep. Full list on the pricing page.

Frequently asked questions
Is Japanese or UK factory tint legal in Ireland?
Rear glass is fine at any shade. Front glass must still meet the Irish 65% windscreen and 50% front side limits.
Will imported tint fail the NCT?
It can, if the front side glass is darker than 50% light transmission.
Can you correct an import before the test?
Yes, we strip illegal front film and refit at a legal shade.
