Privacy glass vs window tint: what is the difference?

Factory privacy glass looks dark but does far less for heat than people assume. Here is why plenty of drivers tint over it anyway.
The short answer
Privacy glass is tinted during manufacture — the colour is in the glass itself. Window tint is a film applied to the inside of the pane. Privacy glass gives you the dark look; film is what adds meaningful heat and UV rejection.
Why people tint over factory privacy glass
Privacy glass is usually around 25–30% light transmission, and its heat performance is modest. A quality film applied over it darkens the glass further and adds the infrared rejection the factory glass never had.

Does film over privacy glass look too dark?
It can, and that is a real conversation to have before we cut. Over privacy glass we usually suggest 35% rather than 20% — the combined result lands close to where a 20% film would sit on clear glass.
