Will tinted windows fail the NCT?

The NCT is only interested in the front glass. Here is exactly what gets checked, what fails, and how to fix it before test day.
The short answer
Tinted rear windows do not fail the NCT — there is no light limit behind the B-pillar. A fail comes from film on the windscreen or the front side windows that drops light transmission below 65%.
What the tester is looking at
Windscreen
Checked for anything that obstructs the driver's view, including added film and heavy top strips.
Front side windows
Checked against the 65% light transmission requirement.
Rear glass
Not a light-transmission item — factory privacy glass and aftermarket film are both fine.
Condition of the film
Bubbling, lifting or damaged film on front glass is an obstruction issue in its own right.
The most common fail we see
An import that arrived from Japan or the UK with dark film already on the front doors. The car drives fine, looks great, and fails on the front glass. The fix is stripping the film — not an argument at the test centre.
Getting ready for test day
- Strip any added film from the windscreen and front doors
- Make sure the glass is left clean, with no adhesive haze
- Keep the rear as dark as you like — it is not tested
- Book the strip a week before the test, not the day before
What it costs to put right
Film removal is quoted after we see the glass, because heat-baked old film takes far longer than recent work. A legal-limit front pair fitted after stripping is priced the same as any other front pair — see the full price list.
