# Are tinted windows illegal in Ireland?

## Why so many cars look very dark and are still legal

Most of the dark glass you see on Irish roads is behind the driver. That glass is unrestricted, so a 5% "limo" shade on the rear of a family SUV is perfectly legal. Plenty of cars also leave the factory with privacy glass already fitted in the rear.

## Where drivers get caught out

The three common problems are imports that arrived with dark front film already on, a front pair matched to a dark rear "so it looks even", and old film that was never removed properly. All three are front-glass issues.

## What a Garda check looks like

A roadside check is a judgement call on the front glass. If the film is obviously heavy on the driver's door, expect to be asked about it. Film fitted at the legal limit is not something you will be pulled over for.
